Young Advocates Committee of the Chamber of advocates
ABA/ROLI in cooperation with the Young Advocates Committee (the “Committee”) of the Chamber of Advocates (the “Chamber”) on September 18 th conducted the first event in a new initiative called “Law Day.”
The Committee was created by the Chamber in 2007 to more actively involve a traditionally under-served portion of Chamber membership in Chamber activities. The Committee is made up of future leaders in the legal profession and of the Chamber. ABA/ROLI supports the group and assists in the enhancement of the young advocates’ capacities to carry out their work duties at a highly professional level.
During the “Law Day” event, Board members of the Committee provided pro-bono services and conducted a public legal education seminar on juvenile rights. The Event was held at the Anania Shirakatsi Lyceum. The Committee was represented by Board members Karapet Agadjanyan (Chairperson), Anna Juvanova, Karen Manucharyan, Ovsanna Stepanyan, and Nelly Avetisyan. Presentations on juvenile rights were made to a group of approximately 50 students of the Lyceum between the ages of 12 and 16.
Topics covered during the “Law Day” event included juvenile rights and duties under the civil and criminal laws and procedures, presented by Mr. Manucharyan, juvenile and civil transactions, presented by Ms. Stepanyan; and juveniles and inheritance, presented by Ms. Avetisyan.
After each presentation, the presenter asked the audience questions about the topics covered. Students who gave the best and most complete answers received small prizes from ABA/ROLI Country Director, Kregg Halstead and Rule of Law Legal Specialist, Kristina Ross. Three students who themselves posed the best legal questions to the presenters were also given small prizes.
In an effort to further raise public awareness about the legal profession and its role in defending citizens’ rights, ABA/ROLI has recently created seven television programs, which were shown on Armenian Public Television during the summer of 2009. At the conclusion of the “Law Day” event, one of these programs, depicting community rights for peaceful use of residential premises was screened by the students. At the conclusion of the program, a discussion with the students was facilitated by Mr. Halstead about their understanding and perception of human rights, and their reactions to the topics covered by the presenters.
